Removable Appliances

Depending on the jaw or tooth misalignment, there are different treatment approaches. If there is a jaw misalignment and sufficient growth can still be expected, treatment often begins with a removable brace. Particularly for early treatment—that is, for children aged 4 to 10—a removable appliance is often better suited. Its use can also be beneficial to prepare for treatment with a fixed brace.

The conventional removable brace is individually manufactured from plastic and wire constructions. Through integrated springs and screws, the teeth are moved in the desired direction.

The effectiveness of a removable brace depends crucially on discipline in wearing it—in other words, the cooperation of the young patient is essential: The appliance should be worn for at least 14 hours per day (afternoons and nights), typically over a period of one to one and a half years. The fact that braces nowadays come in different colors and designs makes it easier for children to comply with the required wearing time.

Advantage of a removable brace: Since it is removable, the teeth are much easier to clean.
